Homework Folders come home every Friday and should be returned the following Friday. Poems for Home and Love Notes are also part of the weekly homework. Students who don't finish these in class should be completed at home and returned the next day.
Students who do not turn in their homework or who turn in unfinished work may be kept in to finish it during their recess.
When learning anything new, it is important to practice, practice, practice! Kids learning to play a sport or instrument get better with practice and repetition. READING and other skills are no different. If kids want to be super readers, they need to PRACTICE!
Take a look at the diagram at the bottom of this page to see how reading practice helps.

Homework packets Students bring home a packet of homework that includes a first grade newsletter, attached to Language Arts and Math Practice pages EVERY Friday in their Homework/Communication folder. The packet is due on the following Friday. Students should only spend about 10-15 minutes each day working on their homework packets, and an additonal 20 minutes reading independently. Late homework packets result in a negative consequence, such as missing recess to complete work. Parents should sign the reading log after students have read, and sign tickets for any activities completed from the "Un-homework". Reading is the most important part of your child's homework. If they do not practice reading everyday students will not improve as readers. There will also usually be 1-2 math practice pages included in homework packets.
In addition to weekly homework packets, students are responsible for completing "Poems for Home" and "Love Notes".

Poems for Home are done in class every Tuesday, are taken home, and should be read to parents and family members. After your child reads their poem aloud, parents should include a positive comment and sign that the child read aloud, and the Poems for Home booklets should be returned to school on Wednesday. Students can use their Poems as part of their reading log responsibilities.

Love Notes are completed in class every Wednesday are taken home for parents to respond and are returned on Thursday. Love Notes teach students the basic friendly letter format and become a wonderful memento for your child. Questions allow parents to create a special bond with their child that will last a lifetime. These "notes" are saved and bound for a wonderful keepsake at the end of the year.
